Tax Refunds Delayed by the Millions

As of April 26, 2021, “The IRS is holding 29 million tax returns for manual processing, delaying tax refunds for many Americans, according to the National Taxpayer Advocate”.

We here at Nel Tax and Financial Solutions understand that many taxpayers are concerned about receiving their tax refunds, or rely on their tax refunds as one of their means to rebuild from whatever financial setbacks experienced due to COVID.

However, once a return is filed, there is nothing more anyone can do to make the IRS and the state taxing authorities process the returns faster besides wait.

The media is doing its job to create pressure on the agencies to expedite refund processing by highlighting the delays resulting from mounting backlogs of returns and overworked, limited staff. But even with this kind of public pressure, the IRS and state taxing agencies will require time to implement their solutions.

So what can taxpayers do today about their tax refunds?

Continue to visit “Where’s my refund” on the IRS.gov. The website is updated daily with current information about the status of taxpayers federal tax refund.

Most states also offer an online option to check the status of any pending state tax refunds on their respective official state taxing authority websites.

It is frustrating as some taxpayers have been waiting for weeks and even months now for tax refunds. But until the IRS and other taxing authorities can hire more people, upgrade their software and technology infrastructure, and have the time to improve their operational processes to establish better service for those depending on their government to run smoother.
